Belgium, WW1 Battlefields
Monday 7th August 2017 to Friday 11th August 2017 : 5 days
Cycling around the Ypres Salient area, visiting the sites of Passendale, Tyne Cot, Hill 62 trenches, Essex farm, Langmark German cemetery (visited by Harry Patch), Messines Ridge, Irish Peace Park, the site of the Christmas truce where a football game was played and the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial. Easy pace.
2017 is the 100th anniversary of Passendale. Follow the course of the Ypres Salient battle in its 3 stages and also visit two German cemeteries, Langmark mentioned above and Vladso where you will see the grieving parents statue by German artist Kathe Kollwitz whose son was killed aged 18 at Diksmuide and lies in front of the statues. Essex farm is where the poem 'In Flanders Fields The Poppies Grow' was written. Also here is the grave of one of the youngest soldiers to be killed. New for this year is a visit to the site of the Christmas truce, where the British and German soldiers came out of the trenches and met in no mans land on Christmas day and played football.
