Cycling around the Ypres Salient area, visiting the sites of Passendale, Tyne Cot, Hill 62 & Hill 60 Essex farm, Langmark German cemetery (visited by Harry Patch), Messines Ridge, Irish Peace Park, Memorial to the cycling division and the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate Memorial. Full commentary given at memorials visited. Easy pace.
2018 is the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1. Follow the course of the Ypres Salient battle in its 3 stages and also visit two German cemeteries, Langmark mentioned above and Vladso where you will see the grieving parents statue by German artist Kathe Kollwitz whose son was killed aged 18 at Diksmuide and lies in front of the statues. Essex farm is where the poem 'In Flanders Fields The Poppies Grow' was written. Also here is the grave of one of the youngest soldiers to be killed. Visit to the site of the Christmas truce, where the British and German soldiers came out of the trenches and met in no mans land on Christmas day and played football. Visit The Bluff the only point where the allied position was higher than the Germans and where the Coming World Remember us models will be dispayed.
