Spanish Primavera (1)

Spanish Primavera (1)

3rd March 2019 - 10th March 2019 (8 days)

A few places available including a female to share

Escape the British winter for Spanish Spring (Primavera), experiencing a true taste of Spanish living in an authentic hotel in Denía on the Costa Blanca. Ride through orange groves, vineyards and almond plantations, with lots of level riding or graded climbs, fabulous views and magnificent descents. Includes airport transfer.
Denia lies in one of Europe's most significant rain shadows and as such, it is a fabulous place to spend a week or two getting in some early season cycling. Many of the professional cycling teams base themselves here over the winter, with the opportunity for riding on quiet roads, smooth tarmac and generally reliable weather conditions. But why not do it in style? This small hotel is unlike the many much larger establishments that cater exclusively for the sun loving tourists. Instead, a typically Spanish hotel, right in the centre of this beautiful, lively and historic town. We will collect you from the airport and lead you on a choice of two rides each day, using our extensive knowledge of local lanes acquired during more than 100 days of riding in the region. Please note that this can be extended to a two week holiday – see the holiday commencing on 10 March 2019 for second week.

Accommodation & Meals

This tour is based at a small family-run authentic Spanish hotel in the central old town of Denía in the Costa Blanca. Rooms are based on two people sharing twin or double rooms, with all breakfasts and five evening meals included in the tour price. Single rooms might be available for a supplement, but vegetarian meal options might be very limited.

Vehicle Support

Flights are not included in the price of this tour, however transfers from Alicante airport are, using a local coach operator with experience of transporting bicycles. Your flight must arrive at Alicante between approx 1045 and 1115, and at the time of writing, flights from Manchester, Luton and Glasgow arrive during these times. Other flights may be available, but please be aware that the transfer from Alicante to Denia is approx 100km and so a private taxi would be very expensive. Increasing the number of arrival options only increases the likelihood of delays so please speak to the Tour Managers should you intend to use any other departure airport. Your return transfer will be suitable for flights departing after 1100. Be sure not to book any travel arrangements to the start of the tour until the tour managers have confirmed the tour is running.

EU citizens must hold a passport that is still valid on the date of their return to their home country. Holders of non-EU passports are advised to check whether they require a visa.

The Area Covered By The Holiday

This is a fixed centre tour based in Denía, which lies on the Costa Blanca, approximately halfway between Alicante and Valencia. Denía lies in one of Europe's most significant rain shadows and as such, it is a fabulous place to spend time getting-in some early season cycling. Many of the professional cycling teams base themselves here over the winter, taking advantage of the quiet roads, smooth tarmac and generally reliable weather conditions. But why not do it in style? This small hotel is unlike the many much larger establishments that cater exclusively for the sun loving tourists. Instead, a typically Spanish hotel, right in the centre of this beautiful, lively and historic town.

Rides & Rest Days

You will be riding amongst orange groves, cherry, almond and olive plantations, and often with sea views, in weather that is normally dry and sunny but still occasionally chilly. Surfaces are normally smooth tarmac, though some rides might take in some sections of firm track, if so, these will have a relatively good surface. Each day's rides allow plenty of opportunity for sightseeing and exploration.
Participants may choose from two led rides each day, and it is hoped that each group will stay loosely together and meet up at turns or junctions and, of course, refreshment stops. Group A rides will be approx 50-80km in length, at a pace of 14-18 kph average. Group B rides will be 65-110km in length, at a pace of 17-21 kph, and often more hilly in nature. GPX files can be provided for all rides.

Accommodation & Meals

The hotel is an authentic, typically Spanish hotel, run by an English speaking family, in the centre of the old part of Denía close to the mediaeval castle. Rooms are twin or double with en-suite facilities. All breakfasts are included, as well as five evening meals, which will be authentic Spanish dishes. No evening meals will be provided on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.
Due to the nature of Spanish food, vegetarian food may be difficult to obtain, and you should contact the tour manager in advance if you are a vegetarian wishing to book. During the day, rides will take you to cafés and bars where snacks and lunch can be purchased; allow approximately 5 Euros for a sandwich and a drink.

Travel

There are no flight arrangements included in the tour price, thus it is very important to note that neither your Tour Manager nor CTC Cycling Holidays & Tours are responsible for you in any way until the appointed time at the designated meeting point. Should you fail to arrive at the appointed time for whatever reason, we will not be responsible for any additional expenses you may incur in order to meet up with the tour group. Before finalising travel arrangements to meet the tour, you should ensure that you have read and understood our booking conditions. Should this tour not attract sufficient bookings to reach the minimum operating size, we may cancel the tour at any time up to 10 weeks before departure. It is therefore recommended that you book fully flexible and refundable transport and accommodation or wait until you know the tour is going ahead, as, in the event of the tour being cancelled, we will not be responsible for any losses incurred.

Group Information

The maximum number of participants will be 18.

Weather & Clothing

“Primavera” means “Spring” in Spanish, and although technically this is a winter tour, it feels like Spring to British people. The routes for each day will be published the evening before when the likely weather conditions are known, to ensure we make the best use of any wind direction. You should carry a light waterproof, both for the possibility of rain and also as an additional layer. Local Spanish cyclists always wear far more winter clothing than we would, though you probably won't want or need to follow their example! The temperature is likely to be such that you will wear 3⁄4 tights or even shorts, and if you dress for a British spring day then you won't go far wrong. Casual clothing will be needed for the evenings rather than cycling clothing.

Cycles & Equipment

A touring cycle, road bike or hybrid bike would be suitable, and you are unlikely to need mudguards or cycle lights. You should ensure your cycle is well maintained, paying particular attention to wheels, tyres and brakes. Tandems are not suitable, as the transfer vehicle cannot accommodate them. A low bottom gear is recommended; if unsure about gears, please talk to the tour managers. Participants will be expected to carry each day sufficient spares and tools to deal with punctures and minor repairs.
You will not need to carry luggage, but a rack top pack or bar bag will be useful for carrying your waterproof jacket, any spare clothing needed for the day, snacks, a camera, and your map.
Cycle hire is possible from a number of locations but needs arranging well in advance. Closest hire outlet to the hotel is Cafe Cyclista, about a mile away; the owners are English speaking should you wish to discuss the matter over the phone. The hire price for a carbon framed road bike is approximately 125€ per week (www.cafeciclista.es). Please note though, that CTC Cycling Holidays do not recommend specific hire bikes and accept no liability for participants using them. Cycle hire is not part of your holiday contract. Helmets are a legal requirement in Spain, though there are some situations where a helmet is not compulsory. Full details about the Spanish law and the powers of the traffic police can be obtained from Cycling UK.

Maps & Guides

As the rides will be led, you will not need route cards, though you will probably wish to carry a map. A cycle specific map of the Costa Blanca area can be found here  www.bikemaps.co.uk/overseas/north-costa-blanca-road-cycle-map.htm (use the code "CTC" to receive a 10% discount). A selection of rides in GPX format can be provided if people wish to have these, although the ride leaders will use their experience to guide you, and they might not stick precisely to a GPX track, particularly if there is something unexpected to be seen. The network of lanes is extensive, making route cards extremely difficult to produce and to follow.

Travel Insurance & Advice

You must arrange your own travel insurance. In addition, EU nationals should carry a European Health Insurance Card. This enables you to take advantage of emergency medical services for free or at a discount under a reciprocal provision that exists between EU member states. Your travel insurer may refuse to meet the extra costs of medical treatment if you do not carry this card.
Before booking, you should check the Foreign Office “Travel Advice by Country” at www.fco.gov.uk or on 0845 850 2829.

Other Information

Please note that this holiday is also being run during the following week, beginning on 10 Mar 2019. If booking on both weeks, a £70 discount will be applied to this holiday.
