Christmas in York

Thursday 24th December

We meet in the hotel bar at 1800 to discuss the weather and timetable and then enjoy a walk into York to visit The Maltings and/or The Punch Bowl, depending on the requirements of individual members of the group. Meals: None

Friday 25th December

We leave the hotel between 0900 and 0915 for a 28 mile circuit to Selby using tarmac cycle paths and recommended quiet roads of National Cycle Route 65, noting the models of the Solar System, all to scale, along the way.  After a short break outside Selby Abbey we return on B-roads and NCR 65 to enjoy a full Christmas lunch at the hotel. There is an optional late afternoon walk across the racecourse and along the river paths to and from York city centre (approx 5 miles). In the evening we have a buffet dinner at the hotel. Meals: B L D

Saturday 26th December

We leave the hotel between 0900 and 0915 for a 50 mile circuit to Easingwold and Beningbrough Hall (short cuts available), using cycle paths alongside the A64, then soon taking to the Yorkshire lanes through attractive Askham Richard to visit the Battle of Marston Moor Memorial, crossing the River Nidd at Cattal and the Ouse at Aldwark Toll Bridge (now free) to Easingwold for lunch, where pubs and shops will be open. We return via Newton-on-Ouse, the grounds of Beningbrough Hall, NCR 65 and across the Knavesmire. In the evening we dine at the Fox & Roman across the road from the hotel. Meals: B D

Sunday 27th December

The holiday finishes after breakfast. Usually some of the group prefer to spend more time in York, but bear in mind that rooms have to be vacated by 1200. The hotel parking facilities can be used until later in the day. Meals: B

Meals: B = Breakfast  L = Lunch  D = Dinner

Travel Insurance

Obtaining travel insurance is optional for UK residents as your Cycling UK membership provides third party cover. However, this does not cover any other risks such as cancellation charges, personal injury or lost property. We therefore strongly recommend that suitable insurance is taken out to safeguard against such risks. Members who do not reside in the UK are not covered for third party and are advised to obtain suitable cover before leaving their normal residence. If you already have an annual policy, you may need to confirm that it will cover a UK holiday or make provision for it to do so.

Travel

There is a railway station in York, just over a mile away, and there are cycle lanes on the road to the hotel. Cars can be parked in the hotel grounds and cycles stored overnight in a hotel room.

Group Information

The maximum number of participants will be 16 excluding the Tour Manager.

Weather & Clothing

The weather is in the lap of the gods. We have had crisp, sunny weather most years since 2004 but snow and ice reduced most of the group to walking in 2009 and 2010, and the river paths were flooded in 2012, 2014 and 2015. Bringing a variety of medium thickness multi layers of cycling, or outdoor clothing which can be combined to cope with the variety of possible temperatures, is recommended. You should also bring waterproofs, a change of clothing for the evening and comfortable walking shoes if you plan to walk around York or if the weather looks like snow.

Cycles & Equipment

A touring cycle or lightweight MTB is suitable, which must be in good working order, especially the brakes! A bottom gear of 30 inches or less is recommended.

Maps & Guides

You should carry a map in case you become separated from the group. The whole area is covered by the Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Landranger maps 105 (York & Selby) and 100 (Malton Pickering & Surrounding Area).
