Wander to Whitchurch Weekend 2
25th September 2021 - 26th September 2021 (2 days)
A weekend cycling break for those who like to get some miles in, with an overnight stay at an historic pub. Meet outside Raynes Park Rail Station (a Travelodge is available nearby) at 9am for an initially flat ride out west via Hampton Court and Runnymede to a lunch stop at Henley-on-Thames, before continuing via a meandering route with some hilly lanes, but also some great descents, to Whitchurch in Hampshire, and then a short hop (8 miles) to our overnight stop at The Wheatsheaf at North Waltham, a 3-star Greene King Inn. Saturday's total 88 miles and 3,683ft of ascent. The Wheatsheaf is an 18th-century former posting house and coaching stop, visited by authoress Jane Austin as a child. We can enjoy traditional pub food, real ales or fine wines.
Following breakfast we ride a delightful route back to Raynes Park, via Preston Candover, with climbs around Medstead, before descending to Alton, then we stop at Alice Holt Cafe before passing near Godalming. After crossing the North Downs, followed by some great descending and some rolling hills, we arrive back in Raynes Park to say our goodbyes. Sunday's total 59 miles and 3,021ft of ascent.

Saturday 25th September
We will meet outside Raynes Park station, Coombe Lane side, at 0900 for an initially fairly flat ride in a westerly direction, via Hampton Court and Runnymede, to Henley-on-Thames for a cafe or perhaps a supermarket lunch stop. Afterwards we start to climb via a meandering route, with some hilly lanes but also some good descents, to Whitchurch in Hampshire, from where it's another 8 miles to our overnight stop at the Wheatsheaf in North Waltham, a 3-star Greene King Inn. 88miles. Total ascent 3,683ft. Stay 1 night. Meals: None
Sunday 26th September
After breakfast we return to Surbiton and Raynes Park via a different but also scenic route via Preston Candover village, than climb near Medstead before descending towards Alton with a lunch stop at Alice Holt Forest Cafe. After crossing the North Downs we enjoy some descending, then follow undulating roads back to Surbiton and Raynes Park where the holiday ends. 59 miles. Total ascent 3,021ft. Meals: B

Accommodation & Meals
Accommodation on the night will be in a 3-star hotel with en suite facilities. All rooms are based on 2 persons sharing, with full breakfast choice included. No other meals are included in the tour price.
No vehicle support is provided. Participants are expected to carry their own luggage. You are encouraged to travel light on this weekend break.
Obtaining travel insurance is optional for UK residents as your Cycling UK membership provides third party cover. However, this does not cover any other risks such as cancellation charges, personal injury or lost property. We therefore strongly recommend that suitable insurance is taken out to safeguard against such risks. Members who do not reside in the UK are not covered for third party and are advised to obtain suitable cover before leaving their normal residence. If you already have an annual policy, you may need to confirm that it will cover a UK holiday or make provision for it to do so.
The price of £75 is based on a minimum number of 8 people taking part in the holiday; please note Booking Conditions, clause 3. If there are insufficient bookings by 17th July 2021, we will contact you and return all monies paid.

A deposit of £10 per person is payable upon booking, with the final balance of £65 per person to be paid ten weeks prior to departure, by 17th July 2021.

The Area Covered By The Holiday
The route covers the following counties and areas:- Surrey, South Oxfordshire, Berkshire, and Hampshire. We follow a route quite near the River Thames to Henley, and cross it at Pangbourne, North West of Reading. The route is fairly flat to Henley, then more scenic, undulating and hilly and before Whitchurch we climb gradually to about 700 feet (Hannington). The route after Henley is rural and usually quiet. On Sunday the highest point reached is also about 700 feet (Wivelrod), but only involves a climb of about 400 feet. The mainly rural route passes well to the south of Basingstoke, Farnham and then Guildford, before crossing the North Downs (at 666 ft). Occasionally main roads have to be crossed or used as linking roads, but the route is mainly quiet, through some historic villages.
Rides & Rest Days
Apart from any refreshment breaks, most of each day will be spent in the saddle. All the route is on tarmac roads, using a mixture of lanes, B-Roads and A-Roads. As usual with rural roads, please be aware of any loose gravel, debris, potholes, uneven surfaces, drains, etc. Take care on any steep descents with blind bends!
The Tour Manager will lead at a relaxed pace of 10 - 12 mph on the flat, tackling any climbs at a slower pace - we can take hills at our own pace then re-group at the top of climbs. Any faster riders are welcome to ride ahead at their own pace, assuming they feel confident to follow the (supplied) GPS route, and outline route instructions, which will be supplied in advance of the weekend. As no back-up vehicle is provided, it is important that each rider feels confident and is fit enough to undertake this fairly high mileage weekend, carrying their own spares and minimum luggage.
Accommodation & Meals
Two participants sharing a twin-bed room, or two sharing a family room (double bed and single bed). A very limited number of single beds may be available, at an extra cost of £40. You are advised to bring ear plugs in the event of snoring. The only included meal is a full breakfast on Sunday. We have planned lunch and snack stops during the day, but you are also advised to bring some emergency rations, energy bars, etc, and one or two water bottles.
We will meet outside Raynes Park Railway station, Combe Lane side, at 9.00am for a 9.15am departure.
The maximum number of participants will be 11 excluding the Tour Manager.
Weather & Clothing
The weather in South East England in September is variable, so you should dress suitably according to the weather forecast just before the weekend. Aside from your on-bike attire, a lightweight packable waterproof jacket is always useful to carry, and some lightweight clothing and sandals to wear in the evening.
Cycles & Equipment
A lightweight touring or road bike is suitable for this tour. You should ensure your cycle is well maintained, paying particular attention to wheels, tyres and brakes. A low bottom gear (e.g. small chainring the same size or smaller than the largest cog on your rear wheel) is recommended. If you are unsure about gears, please discuss with the Tour Manager. Mudguards are optional but show courtesy to those who are following you in wet weather. Lights are recommended. New tyres are recommended of at least 25mm diameter. Participants will be expected to carry each day sufficient spares and tools to deal with punctures and minor repairs.
A pannier, or rack top pack or bar bag will be useful for carrying wet weather gear, lightweight clothing for the evening, phone, snacks and your map. Each participant is expected to bring, and carry, all of their own clothing, personal items and spares. You are advised to do some riding before the tour with a similar load to that which you will be carrying during the tour to get a feel for how your bike will handle.
Helmets are recommended but it's your personal choice.
Maps & Guides
The links to the route and GPX file downloads on Ride with GPS will be provided in advance of the weekend, and a list of all the places we cycle through in order of visit. It's also useful to carry an outline map of the area we will cover, perhaps taken from an atlas. The address, phone number and location of your accommodation will be supplied. You should carry these, and a mobile phone, if you use one.
